2006-08-26 - Breckenridge, Colorado - Quandary
My buddy Manish wanted to ascend Quandary as part of his final weekend in Breckenridge, before moving back to New York City. I thought it was a great idea, especially since I'd never been. Manish planned to get together at about 6 am that morning to head up the 14er. He invited several friends to come along. That morning, I got up at about 5 am and spent about a half hour rubbing my eyes, trying to wake up. Once I was awake, I got ready and went outside to find that it was raining. So I got into my car where I had left my cell phone charging. On my way to Manish's house I checked my messages. I was listening to the message from Manish just as I pulled up to his house. His message said that it was raining and that they weren't going to go up Quandary. So I called and said, "I'm outside your house and ready to go." He wasn't sure about the rain, but I said that we can't plan around the weather and since we're already up that we might as well go. We all had foregone going out the night before to do this epic hike and since we were already up, we might as well make an attempt. If the weather goes bad, then we just turn around--at least we'd have a story to tell. We finally made it to the trailhead around 7:30 am at which time the rain let up. We walked for a good distance in the clouds, but made it to the top without a problem. The clouds parted at times, revealing some nice views. We did get some snow, and there was about an inch of snow on the ground at the peak. But otherwise we were extremely lucky with the weather. There was little to no wind the entire hike, contrasting the cold, gusty winds typically encountered when hiking exposed peaks.
